Product detailed description
Hybrid Wood Protector Black. An oil that colours and protects exterior wood in a single coat.
Shade Black — deep black for modern cladding and fences. An oil finish for decking, cladding, fences, pergolas, doors and garden furniture: apply one coat, wipe off the excess and the wood is protected against sun, rain and wear. It forms no film, so it never peels, and it is maintained with the same oil, without sanding.

Black — deep black for modern cladding and fences.
It is one of twelve natural wood shades; alongside them the manufacturer offers eight bold POP Colours. The photo shows the manufacturer's sample on pine and on-screen colours are approximate — the result depends on the wood species, its age and the surface preparation.
- the pigment with integrated UV stabiliser slows down the greying of the wood
- manufacturer's sample on pine — on larch, oak or exotic species it looks different
- shades can be mixed with each other to create your own colour (manufacturer)
- before buying, test the shade from a 100 ml pack on the same wood
One oil for almost all exterior wood.
Vertical and horizontal surfaces, new and weathered wood — almost all wood species. The manufacturer also permits its use indoors.

Decking & steps
Horizontal surfaces with 10 % accelerator for fast curing and durability.

Façades & cladding
Vertical surfaces without accelerator — maintenance usually after 2–3 years.

Fences, pergolas & shutters
Protection against sun and rain without a film that could peel.
When to add 10 % accelerator to the oil
Horizontal and heavily used surfaces need faster curing and higher durability — which is why 10 % Rubio Monocoat accelerator (component B) is mixed into the oil. On vertical surfaces the oil is used on its own.
| Surface | Examples | Accelerator B |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal | decking, steps, jetties | ✓ add 10 % |
| Horizontal | garden tables, chairs, benches | ✓ add 10 % |
| Vertical | front and exterior doors | ✓ add 10 % |
| Vertical | cladding, façades, fences, windows, shutters | — not needed |
How many m² will a pack cover?
The manufacturer states that one litre covers roughly 30 m² of exterior wood and 50 m² indoors. Actual consumption depends on the wood species and its preparation — absorbent and weathered wood uses more, so allow a reserve. Choose the size below under Variants and the shade in the switch above.
shade test, small items 1 loutdoors ≈ 30 m², indoors ≈ 50 m²
fence, furniture, smaller deck 2.5 loutdoors ≈ 75 m², indoors ≈ 125 m²
decking, cladding

Ready-to-use oil — not to be diluted.
Hybrid Wood Protector comes ready to apply: just stir it thoroughly before use. For decking, garden furniture and doors, add the accelerator (component B); for cladding and fences the oil on its own is enough.
- 100 ml — shade testing and smaller pieces
- 1 l — garden furniture, a fence or a smaller deck
- 2.5 l — decking and cladding
- keeps for up to 36 months in the original packaging

Apply, brush over, wipe off — and you're done.
The oil is applied with a brush in a single coat; after 10 minutes the surface is brushed over with the same brush and after another 5 minutes the excess is wiped off with a cloth. No overlaps, no start marks, no sanding between coats.
- Colours and protects in a single coat — protection against sun, rain, wind and wear
- Forms no film — does not peel, flake or crack
- Keeps the natural look and feel of the wood
- Contains fungicides against mould and algae
Why is one coat enough and why does it never peel?
Hybrid Wood Protector bonds molecularly with the top wood fibres. It does not create a layer ON the wood like a varnish or stain, but becomes part of it — so there is nothing to peel off and a second coat has nothing to adhere to.
- The wood breathes — the oil is vapour-permeable
- Maintenance with the same oil, without sanding off the old finish
- Low consumption — roughly 30 m² per litre outdoors, up to 50 m² indoors
Hybrid Wood Protector (oil)
- Forms no film — nothing peels or cracks
- Renewed with the same oil after cleaning, without sanding
- 0 % VOC — free of water and solvents
Film-forming varnish or stain
- The surface film cracks and peels over time
- Usually sanded back to bare wood before recoating
- Moisture trapped under the film damages the wood
Parameters you can rely on
Source: Rubio Monocoat — Hybrid Wood Protector technical data sheet (manufacturer, 6/2023)
Suitable for almost all wood species outdoors and, according to the manufacturer, also indoors. Leave new pressure-treated (water-repellent) timber to dry out and weather for 6–12 months before treatment.
From cleaning to curing
Surface preparation decides the result — new, weathered and previously treated wood is always cleaned before oiling.
1 · Clean the wood
Wet the surface with a garden hose (not a pressure washer), apply undiluted Exterior Wood Cleaner and scrub with a brush along the grain. Rinse and let it dry completely.
2 · Stir the oil
Stir the oil thoroughly. For decking, garden furniture and doors, add 10 % accelerator B; for cladding and fences it is not needed.
3 · Apply with a brush
Apply a coat of oil with a stiff brush along the grain. On decking, always work 3–4 boards at a time.
4 · Brush over and wipe off
After 10 minutes brush over the surface with the same brush without adding oil. After another 5 minutes wipe off the excess with a lint-free cloth until the surface looks even.
5 · Let it cure
The oil dries in roughly 24 hours; full cure takes 7 days. Until it is dry, do not cover the surface or place heavy objects on it.
⚠️ Watch out for
The oil must not be diluted with anything. Do not apply in direct sunlight, below 10 °C or in the rain — only in dry weather. If horizontal surfaces get rained on within 24–36 hours of application, wipe them dry. An old finish of a different type must be removed (sanding, starting with a coarse grit, e.g. 40 → 80). Oil-soaked rags can self-ignite — soak them in water after use.

Maintained with the same oil — without sanding.
As soon as the wood starts to look weathered, simply clean it and recoat it in the same shade. Horizontal surfaces such as decking, steps and furniture usually need maintenance once a year — ideally before the season of bad weather. Vertical surfaces last longer: on the most exposed sides (south, west) expect maintenance within 2–3 years.
- clean with Exterior Wood Cleaner — dilute 1 : 2 with water for lightly weathered wood, 1 : 1 for more heavily weathered wood
- rinse, let dry and continue from the oil application step
- regular cleaning no sooner than 7 days after application, using Rubio Monocoat products only
How much oil for your surface?
Enter the area and choose exterior or interior — we will calculate an approximate consumption based on the manufacturer's data and recommend a pack size. The oil is applied in a single coat; you can include the accelerator in the calculation or switch it off.

Frequently asked questions
When do I need to add accelerator to the oil?
For horizontal and heavily used surfaces — decking, steps, garden tables, chairs, benches — and for exterior doors, add 10 % Rubio Monocoat accelerator (component B), i.e. 100 ml per 1 l of oil. On cladding, façades, fences and windows the oil is used without accelerator. Use the mix with accelerator within 4–6 hours.
Will the shade look like the photo?
Only approximately. The Black sample is on pine; the result depends on the wood species, its age and the preparation (sanding, cleaning). The manufacturer recommends testing the shade on the same wood as the final project — the smallest 100 ml pack is ideal for this. Shades can also be mixed with each other.
How many m² does the oil cover?
The manufacturer states that one litre in a single coat covers roughly 30 m² of exterior wood and 50 m² indoors. Outdoors, 100 ml therefore covers roughly 3 m², 1 l covers 30 m² and 2.5 l covers 75 m². Absorbent and weathered wood uses more — the manufacturer recommends checking consumption on a test sample.
How often does the finish need maintenance?
Horizontal surfaces (decking, steps, furniture) usually once a year, ideally before the season of bad weather. Vertical surfaces less often — on the most exposed sides (south, west) within 2–3 years. Simply clean the surface with Exterior Wood Cleaner and recoat it in the same shade, without sanding.
Can I apply it over an old finish?
Only over Hybrid Wood Protector. Any other old finish (varnish, stain, another oil) must first be removed by sanding — start with a coarse grit and work through to finer ones (for decking e.g. 40 → 60 → 80).
Can Hybrid Wood Protector also be used indoors?
Yes, the manufacturer also permits it indoors. For interior surfaces under normal use (floors, tables), however, Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C is the intended oil.
