Product detailed description
A natural solvent from citrus — deeper penetration for oil finishes
A citrus solvent made from citrus peels, consisting of 100% d-limonene. A natural thinner and an alternative to harsh chemical solvents: thin tung or linseed oil with it and the finish penetrates deeper into the wood, dries faster and you work more efficiently — with no compromise on quality.
Key features
A single ingredient from citrus peels — and everything you need from a solvent in woodworking.
A single ingredient. No added chemicals.
Citrus Solvent is a distillate from citrus peels — pure d-limonene with no chemical additives. Unlike citrus solvents cut with harmful substances, it has GRAS status and is safe for food-contact surfaces. A natural substitute for white spirit — for your project and the environment.
- thins tung and linseed oils, Furniture Oil and Furniture Butter
- a thinned first coat penetrates deeper into the wood fibres
- a finish at the right consistency dries faster
- GRAS · food-contact safe — no compromise on safety
Thins. Cleans. Removes old finishes.
Most often you will reach for Citrus Solvent for thinning oil finishes — a thinned first coat is the foundation of a long-lasting finish. It is just as useful for cleaning and degreasing wood before finishing and for removing old oil finishes, for instance when restoring antique furniture.
- thinning: deeper penetration and faster work between coats
- cleaning: preparing the wood surface before oiling
- restoration: a helper with old oil finishes
How much solvent to how much oil?
The manufacturer’s official recommendation — more solvent for the first coat, less for the following ones.
What to combine Citrus Solvent with
The manufacturer recommends starting at a 1:1 ratio — for the first, penetrating coat of tung oil. Not sure which tung oil to choose? Read the comparison of polymerized and pure tung oil.
Polymerized Tung Oil
RATIO 1:1 · HARDER SURFACE · SATINHeat-polymerized tung oil for floors, worktops and garden furniture. Faster cure, satin finish.

Pure Tung Oil
RATIO 1:1 · MATTE FINISHTraditional unmodified tung oil — the most natural matte look for wood, indoors and outdoors.
Pure Tung Oil →
Polymerized Linseed Oil
RATIO 2:1 · FAST-DRYINGPolymerized linseed oil — because of its thicker consistency thin it 2:1 (solvent : oil), the manufacturer recommends.

Frequently asked questions
Thinning ratios, safety and practical tips.
At what ratio should I thin?
For tung oils (Pure and Polymerized), Furniture Oil and Furniture Butter the manufacturer recommends starting at a 1:1 ratio or a lower proportion of solvent. For the thicker Polymerized Linseed Oil start at 2:1 (solvent : oil).
Why mix only in metal containers?
It is an explicit recommendation of the manufacturer — mix the solvent only in metal cans or containers.
Is it safe for food-contact surfaces?
Yes — Citrus Solvent has GRAS status and is food-contact safe, unlike citrus solvents cut with chemicals. Like any solvent, however, it requires safe handling, see the safety data sheet.
Does it remove old finishes too?
Yes, it cleans wooden surfaces effectively and helps remove old oil finishes — for instance when restoring antique furniture.
Why thin the first coat of oil?
Thinned oil penetrates deeper into the wood fibres and dries faster — the base of the finish is then more thorough and longer-lasting. Less solvent is enough for the following coats.
How do I handle the product safely?
It is a flammable liquid that irritates the skin and may cause an allergic reaction — wear gloves and safety glasses, keep it away from ignition sources and store it in a ventilated place. Full instructions are in the safety data sheet above.

Walrus Oil — oils and waxes with no chemicals, no synthetics
After a difficult childhood marked by health complications, Dave Darr graduated from college in 2009 and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In his spare time he restored antique furniture and began experimenting with unique, all-natural ingredients that could be used as a wood finish.
#ShowMore#
A few years later Dave moved to Ozark and started a commercial woodworking business, supplying restaurants with tables and cutting boards made from local timber sourced in the Ozark Mountains. He noticed the market lacked food-safe wood finishes with transparent ingredient lists — so he began bottling and selling his own proven recipes. He called them “Walrus Oil”, a name loosely inspired by the impressive moustache he was known for.
Since day one, Walrus Oil has donated profits to environmental programmes. In 2020 the company partnered with the National Forest Foundation, pledging to plant several thousand trees a year. In 2021 it deepened that commitment by becoming an official tree-planting partner. Walrus Oil is also an official member of 1% For The Planet.

Apply a generous coat and let the wood drink. The oil penetrates deep, restores colour and water repellency — wipe off the excess once it has soaked in.
A thin coat of wax closes the oiled surface and adds a soft satin sheen. Let it set, then buff with a non-abrasive cloth.

What you ask us about Walrus Oil
Are the products genuinely safe for food contact?
Yes. The kitchen range is NSF certified and meets FDA GRAS (food-contact safe). The products are also vegan, certified by the American Vegetarian Association, and contain no VOCs or fragrance — suitable for sensitive users and commercial kitchens alike.
Oil or wax for a cutting board?
Both — each does a different job. Cutting Board Oil penetrates the wood, saturates it and restores water repellency. Wood Wax then seals the surface and adds a soft satin sheen. The best result is the combination: oil first, wax once it has soaked in.
What is the difference between tung and linseed oil?
Pure Tung Oil is a 100% pure natural oil — it penetrates deeply, beautifully enhances the grain and creates a water-resistant surface, but cures more slowly. Polymerized Linseed Oil is heat-treated linseed oil — it cures faster and forms a tougher film. Both are suitable for dining tables and boards.
How often should I treat the wood?
It depends on use. A reliable cue: as soon as the wood looks dry, lightens in colour or stops repelling water, it is time to oil. For heavily used boards, a quick top-up with coconut oil between full treatments helps.
