Walrus Oil Polymerized Tung Oil – polymerised tung oil for wood

Product detailed description
Tung oil that polymerizes faster — a natural finish for floors, worktops and garden furniture
A 100% natural oil finish for wood with zero VOC. The base is the same as pure tung oil — cold-pressed oil from tung tree seeds. Gentle heating (heat-bodied), however, means part of the natural polymerization already happened during manufacturing: the oil therefore dries considerably faster, cures to a harder, more durable surface with a soft satin sheen and protects against scratches, water, moisture and UV — indoors and outdoors.
What Polymerized Tung Oil gives you
The same natural purity as classic tung oil — just without the long wait and with a more durable result.
Less waiting, a harder surface, years without recoating.
Gentle heating (heat-bodied) completes part of the natural polymerization during manufacturing. For you this means: the finish is usually touch-dry within 24 hours — you build up coats without waiting days between steps — and it cures to a harder, more durable surfacethat withstands everyday wear. All while keeping tung oil’s famous water resistance.
- touch-dry within 24 hours — fast layering, even on larger projects
- a harder, tougher finish than pure tung oil
- a soft satin sheen brings out colour and grain without dyes
- with several coats it lasts for years without recoating
From the floor to the garden chair.
The manufacturer recommends it wherever wood takes a beating. Wooden floors benefit from the harder finish, kitchen cabinets and worktops from food-contact safety, bathrooms from protection against water and moisture. And because it also resists UV, it handles picnic tables and garden chairs just as well as the dining table in the living room.
- wooden floors and heavily used surfaces
- kitchen cabinets and worktops — food-contact safe
- bathroom vanity tops — water and moisture
- garden furniture — UV and weather
Which tung oil should you choose?
Both are 100% natural and protect wood indoors and out. They differ mainly in curing speed and look: polymerized = faster + satin, pure = slower + matte. We compared both in detail in the article Polymerized vs. pure tung oil for wood.
Polymerized Tung Oil
FASTER CURE · HARDER SURFACE · SATINGently heated (heat-bodied) tung oil — part of the polymerization already took place during manufacturing. Usually touch-dry within 24 hours, cures to a harder, more durable surface and with several coats lasts for years without recoating. The choice for floors and heavily used surfaces.
Pure Tung Oil
PURE TUNG OIL · MATTE FINISHCold-pressed oil from tung tree seeds in its unaltered form — a finish with over 2,500 years of history. It cures by natural oxidation (touch-dry in days, full cure in weeks), penetrates deep into the wood and leaves it with a matte, as-natural-as-possible look.
Pure Tung Oil →
Citrus Solvent
DEEPER PENETRATION · 1:1 RATIOA natural citrus solvent for thinning the oil — the first coat penetrates deeper into the wood and dries faster.
Citrus Solvent →
Step-by-step application
The manufacturer’s official method — all you need is a cloth and sandpaper.
- Sand the surface — raw wood with 220–600 grit.
- Shake and apply a thin coat — for deeper penetration thin the first coat with Citrus Solvent 1:1.
- Let it soak in for 12–24 hours.
- Wipe off the excess with a clean cloth.
- Add more coats — more coats = stronger protection, then years without recoating.
How much wood does a bottle cover?
The manufacturer’s official figure is 2.5–3.5 sq ft per ounce, i.e. roughly 0.8–1.1 m² per 100 ml of oil for one thin coat — exact consumption depends on how absorbent the wood is.
- a 473 ml bottle covers ≈ 3.7–5.2 m² in one coat
- a dining table (~2 m²) gets 2–3 coats from one bottle
- the first, thinned coat uses less

Frequently asked questions
Differences from pure tung oil, application and safety.
How does it differ from pure tung oil?
The base is the same — cold-pressed oil from tung tree seeds. The polymerized oil, however, has been gently heated (heat-bodied), so part of the natural polymerization already took place during manufacturing: it is usually touch-dry within 24 hours (pure oil takes days to become touch-dry and weeks to fully cure), cures to a harder, more durable surface and has a soft satin sheen instead of a matte one. No chemicals, metallic driers or solvents. Pure Tung Oil is also available — a detailed comparison of both oils.
Does it form a film on the wood like varnish?
No. Unlike film-forming finishes such as polyurethane, the oil soaks into the wood and cures within it — no plastic look. The result is a natural-looking surface with a soft satin sheen that lets the wood grain stand out.
Is it food-contact safe?
Yes — it is food-contact safe and contains a single ingredient: polymerized tung oil. That makes it suitable for kitchen worktops and cabinets too.
Can I use it outdoors?
Yes. The manufacturer specifically recommends it for garden furniture — picnic tables or chairs. It protects wood against water, moisture and UV.
How do I get deeper penetration into the wood?
Thin the first coat with a natural solvent — with Citrus Solvent the manufacturer recommends starting at a 1:1 ratio. The oil penetrates deeper and dries faster.
How many coats should I apply?
More coats mean stronger protection. Allow 12–24 hours of drying between coats and always wipe off the excess. A well-applied finish then needs no recoating for years.
How should the oil be stored and how long does it keep?
Cool and dry with the container closed. Once opened, ideally use within 1 year; an unopened container keeps for 2 years or more.

Walrus Oil — oils and waxes with no chemicals, no synthetics
After a difficult childhood marked by health complications, Dave Darr graduated from college in 2009 and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In his spare time he restored antique furniture and began experimenting with unique, all-natural ingredients that could be used as a wood finish.
#ShowMore#
A few years later Dave moved to Ozark and started a commercial woodworking business, supplying restaurants with tables and cutting boards made from local timber sourced in the Ozark Mountains. He noticed the market lacked food-safe wood finishes with transparent ingredient lists — so he began bottling and selling his own proven recipes. He called them “Walrus Oil”, a name loosely inspired by the impressive moustache he was known for.
Since day one, Walrus Oil has donated profits to environmental programmes. In 2020 the company partnered with the National Forest Foundation, pledging to plant several thousand trees a year. In 2021 it deepened that commitment by becoming an official tree-planting partner. Walrus Oil is also an official member of 1% For The Planet.

Apply a generous coat and let the wood drink. The oil penetrates deep, restores colour and water repellency — wipe off the excess once it has soaked in.
A thin coat of wax closes the oiled surface and adds a soft satin sheen. Let it set, then buff with a non-abrasive cloth.

What you ask us about Walrus Oil
Are the products genuinely safe for food contact?
Yes. The kitchen range is NSF certified and meets FDA GRAS (food-contact safe). The products are also vegan, certified by the American Vegetarian Association, and contain no VOCs or fragrance — suitable for sensitive users and commercial kitchens alike.
Oil or wax for a cutting board?
Both — each does a different job. Cutting Board Oil penetrates the wood, saturates it and restores water repellency. Wood Wax then seals the surface and adds a soft satin sheen. The best result is the combination: oil first, wax once it has soaked in.
What is the difference between tung and linseed oil?
Pure Tung Oil is a 100% pure natural oil — it penetrates deeply, beautifully enhances the grain and creates a water-resistant surface, but cures more slowly. Polymerized Linseed Oil is heat-treated linseed oil — it cures faster and forms a tougher film. Both are suitable for dining tables and boards.
How often should I treat the wood?
It depends on use. A reliable cue: as soon as the wood looks dry, lightens in colour or stops repelling water, it is time to oil. For heavily used boards, a quick top-up with coconut oil between full treatments helps.
